Gabrielle Evans

I have been passionate about art since I was young. I am a self-taught artist, beginning in 1996 to experiment with pastel and charcoal. My subject matter was mainly figurative with a particular interest in the female nude. Although still interested in figurative art my current work has been leaning towards experimentation in more abstract art, focusing on texture and colour.

My preferred mediums are oil sticks, oils and acrylics, as well as my old favourite mediums of pastel and charcoal. As a very tactile person I use various texturing processes and mediums and I prefer to use my fingers instead of a brush.

My artwork is constantly evolving as I experiment with new ideas, subjects and techniques. As a student of Art History and Classics at Victoria University, I find my studies influence the nature of my work. Of particular influence are the Medieval and Byzantine periods with their prolific use of goldleaf and intense colours and also Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and the Symbolists. I am very influenced by the vibrant colours and images of Italy, which I have visited twice. I am also drawn to the shapes and colours found in nature. I occasionally use found objects and collage in my work, especially old sheet music, letters, postcards etc. In doing so I feel I provide a link between the old and historic, and the new and more contemporary use of materials and images.

I am a member of the Academy of Fine Arts and have exhibited in a number of their group exhibitions. I have had one solo exhibition on the theme of love and have participated in group shows around the Wellington region, including two at Pataka Museum. I exhibit in galleries in Auckland, Wellington and Napier. My work is also available for lease through the Art Bureau. My work is in private and corporate collections in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, USA and England. I currently work from my own studio in Wellington.
